Quick Tip: Use Chain Links as Jump Rings

One of my favorite time and money saving tips is to use open chain links as jump rings in projects. An open chain link is one which has not been soldered shut, meaning that you can open it and use it just like a jump ring. Megan created the beautiful Emerald Spiral Earrings using this technique and I attached my focal pendant to a chain length (without jump rings) in the Enchanted Woods Necklace.

Beading Table Wednesday: 1/30/13

Julie's Table

Apparently I am feeling very sparkly this week! I just finished a Pandora style bracelet using the new SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS crystal BeCharmed rondelles and also completed two vintage-inspired rings using our new glue-on ring findings. A video on how to make the rings is coming soon!

I too, have sparkles on the brain this week.  But then, that's pretty normal for me!  I love the new jewel tone gunmetal Beadelle pave bead collection, so I'm playing with our different waxed cotton cord options to make some new varieties of Shambhala bracelets.  They're such a nice showcase for these blingtastic beads.  (Yes, I just said blingtastic.)

The Vintaj Patina Metal Effects Workshop

Julie's Workspace at the Workshop
A few weeks ago, Julie and I got to attend an awesome Vintaj workshop on Vintaj Patina Metal Effects.  We spent the afternoon learning and playing along with Mackie Mullane from Vintaj, who led the class.  We took a few photos, and we thought it might be fun to share our experience with you.

Mackie taught us all how to make five beautiful projects from Vintaj components and embellished using Vintaj Patinas.  We had so much fun experimenting with the incredibly versatile patinas.  The projects featured different ways of layering and applying the patinas, and really great ways of combining components into nice composed pieces.

Julie was in heaven with all of the natural metal tones and lovely green shades that lend themselves so well to the Vintaj style.

Of course, I had to put my spin on the color palettes - which meant more pink!  I love how different our pieces look with just a change of colors.

Have you had a chance to experiment with Vintaj Patinas?  What's your favorite way to use them?

Beading Table Wednesday: 01/23/13

Megan's Table

We've been playing with seed bead weaving quite a bit around here lately, which is one of my favorite things!  On my table this week are a couple of experiments that stitch a second layer of netting stitch onto a first layer of netting stitch - it's not as crazy as it sounds once you get going!  I love the lacy effect, and how different it looks when stitched with different beads.

This week I have been playing around with making my own beads using Crystal Clay, bead caps, grommets, and Sparkle Dust mica powder. They are so fun to make and I love how the Crystal Clay dries on its own and does not need to be baked or fired. Here is a tutorial I just finished showing how to make the beads used in the earrings pictured.

Quick Tip from the Beadaholique Girls - The Library!

Hello Friends!

It's Friday morning and Megan and I are both engrossed in our bead weaving projects. As we work, we tend to chat about our projects, what inspires us, what we are going to do next, etc... Today's topic was all about the beading books on our wish list and how great it would be if we could take a quick peek inside before we place an order for them. Then Megan said the most interesting thing: "I think the library has some beading books". WHAT???? Okay, for most people this would not be a big revelation, but for others, like me, this is huge! I always forget that the library exists, which is sad because it is such a wonderful resource. A quick search of our local library system brought up over 100 beading and jewelry making books available for lending - many of which have been on our wish list for months. I will of course still buy beading books because I love to own and have them, but now I can preview the books I want and even have access to out of print ones. YAY!

Guess who is getting a library card this weekend......

January Gems and a Whole New Format for Contests!

It's a new year and we have a whole new structure for our beading contests here at Beadaholique!  We will now be conducting our contests every other month, giving you much more time to create something fabulous to enter.  The submission period will now be over a month long.  And be sure to make good use of all that extra time, because we're also giving away more prizes this year.

There will now be two winners for every contest.  There will be a domestic winner for the top voted entry from the United States, and an international winner.  When submitting your entry, you must include your country of residence.  Finalists will receive exposure on our Facebook and blog, and each winner will receive a $100 Beadaholique gift certificate!  We'll also be selecting an Editor's Pick from the remaining finalists who will receive a $50 gift certificate.

The theme for our first contest of 2013 is “January Gems”—your piece must feature real gemstones such as turquoise, garnet, jade, agate, jasper, etc. There are so many different types of gemstones to choose from! Gemstones can be in a natural or enhanced state (dyed, heat treated, etc.), but we’re looking for real stones, not simply gemstone colors. Use your favorites and send a photo of your finished piece to us by 4PM PT on Tuesday, February 5th, with your name, title of your piece, email address, gemstone(s) used, country of residence and an optional description of your piece in the body of your email.

We will select our top finalists from the contest entries, all of whom will have their work published here in our Beader’s Blog, in the next issue of The Beading Wire and on the Beadaholique Facebook page for public voting. Two winners, one domestic and one international, will each receive a $100 Beadaholique gift certificate and further exposure on our blog and Facebook page! An Editor’s Pick chosen from the remaining finalists will receive a $50 gift certificate.
